Surprised that Rob Maclean is back in the MOTD fold.

What's the score with Guy Havord nowadays? I take it Sky rate him primarily as a pitch-side reporter / interviewer, not a commentator?

I think they do, which is a shame as he was a very good commentator in my opinion.

Yes, I thought he was too. Strange the way Havord's career has developed. If ITV Digital had succeeded and the ITV Sports Channel had become a significant player, then Havord would still be commentating today I'd imagine, given that he must have covered around 30 live matches during the 2001-2002 season, and did some matches for ITV at the World Cup in 02. Wonder why Sky haven't progressed him as a commentator?

It does seem strange that BBC Scotland's "number 1" presenter is on the MOTD commentary rota.

Equally strange (or perhaps telling) is that Maclean* and Paul Mitchell are deemed good enough for MOTD, but Liam McLeod isn't.

*Is it MacLean or Maclean?

Perhaps because both Mitchell and Maclean are better commentators than McLeod?

Although that begs the question as to why BBC Scotland view the matter differently.

Yes, that's what I meant; the strangeness is due to BBC Scotland using McLeod and not MOTD not.

I was about to say I hoped that clarified things, but reading it back it probably doesn't!

It's just a strange situation all-round... Maclean is the best Scottish commentator around (in my humble opinion), so I was suprised that, upon the collapse of Setanta, he didn't come back to his old position. But having stuck with Mitchell, I saw no reason for change, as Mitchell is pretty good.

What are your thoughts on Derek Rae? I rate him very highly and he's Scottish.

"I can't remember the last time I was preparing for a Merseyside derby with both sides in the bottom four. It's staggering to see these two clubs where they are"

This is grays opening statement in his column but yeah am probably wrong could be interpreted in different ways.

Could this preparing to be in the studio tomorrow for the game?

Perhaps he was due to be in Blackpool but they shifted him after how this game shaped up with league positions, take overs, etc?

Richard Keys presenting coverage of Everton vs Liverpool and, later, Blackpool vs Manchester City with Jamie Redknapp and Andy Gray on Sky Sports 1/HD1.

EDIT: Robbie Fowler is there too ... I blame Richard Keys for not introducting him sooner.
