Hi,

Can somebody explain to me how the picks work for these two competitions and how many games can be shown by the eligible companies?

Like the FA Cup between ITV and ESPN, who has first pick and how many can each of them show?
Football League between Sky and BBC, I know BBC have first pick, but how many games can Sky and BBC show over the season, and is that split down into Championship, League 1 and League 2 aswell?

Thanks in advance..
[I think I know more or less how the Premier League and Champions League work]

Thank you everybody, makes sense to me.. And would I be right in saying that BBC gave up their rights to the Play-offs for a League Cup Semi Final and shared-Final?

In terms of the FA Cup the FATV will also broadcast one or two games per round up to the 5th round.

I'm not sure how the replay system works for the 1st and 2nd rounds. ESPN definitely have two choices but it would seem very odd that there would be 3 replays shown for the earlier rounds and not the later ones which leads me to believe that ITV haven't got the rights to/won't be showing any 1st or 2nd round replays next season.

We'll doubtless find out for sure later in the year.

Yes it was a co-bid by Sky and BBC so they shared some of the Carling Cup rights (Simulcast final and both companies show a semi final 1st leg and semi final 2nd leg) and they shared the rights to Championship Package A (BBC have 10 first pick regular season matches and Sky have the 2nd choice play off semi final games)

Sort of.

In summary the actual rights awarded were not precisely in line with the packages offered in the tender document.

The BBC gave up two Championship PO semi legs and gained two Carling Cup semi legs. We don't know how prices paid were adjusted for this (or indeed any of the split of rights costs).

The Carling Cup final was in a separate package.

£550m? Ouch... and only 2p in the £1 for the creditors at the end of it. Sorry situation all round.

Still, it seems that most of the onscreen staff have found work since then ... with Burley arguably getting the most success with his gig at the World Cup Final.

That's another reason why the BBC and ITV will always bid jointly -- they know that together, they can keep the price down but still above the level at which Channel 4 and Five could afford.

It's a shame that Sale is such an awful writer because there's occasionally interesting stuff in there. However when he puts things like;

"Meanwhile, it looked like yet another ITV transmission gaffe when a commercial for the A-Team movie was broadcast after a goalless 90 minutes, proclaiming 'Now that the excitement of the World Cup is over . . .' despite extra time looming."

I am reminded why I never seek out his column to read.

Token Yank
CBC TV ratings for the World Cup Final: 5.131m average with a peak of 7.664 million. Incredible ratings.

http://www.610cktb.com/news/15/1169859

ABC got 15m + Univision's 8.8 mil gets them to about 24 million watching. Good stuff.

I'm pretty sure that ESPN will be getting a very good deal given that the qualifiers will be up against home nation matches on Sky/BBC/ITV.
